Tire Safety Standards in the U.S.
Why Tire Safety Matters in the United States
In the U.S., tires are legally allowed to remain on the road until tread depth reaches 2/32 of an inch — and in some states, as low as 1/32. At these depths, traction is compromised, stopping distances increase, and hydroplaning risk rises significantly.
HA Safer Tire Standard: The 4/32 Solution
Inspired by Europe’s R117-04 regulation, Safe Tread Alliance advocates for a 4/32-inch minimum tread depth standard nationwide to improve wet-weather traction, reduce stopping distance, and save lives.
